Peas and Carrots

No fiesta last night, hence the 9:30am wide eyed Hedy. I worked last night until 10:30pm, bussed it home, pj's and TV. Watched "Forrest Gump" for the 90th time but actually learned something new... the term in spanish for "peas and carrots" as in, "Jenny and I were like peas and carrots" is "manteca y pan", as in bread and butter. Makes sense...plus "arvejas y zanahorias" is quite the mouthful.
So, alittle recap of my return to BA. December I started working in Casa Monserrat, a boutique hotel near San Telmo. At first it was a little intimidating because not only do I have no experience in the hotel business but everything was also explained to me in spanish. Its not that I cant understand, its that when someone is explaining something about money, reservations (i.e. pretty important stuff) you dont really want to miss anything. And when speaking a language that isnt your first it is very common to miss little details and just get the main picture. NOT exactly the way you should be learning when starting a new job. Usually the details are what will allow you to keep you job for more than a day and a half. Anyway, I made it thru the first month, unscathed.
I'll spare you the details of what I have learned but will tell you that working at this hotel really seems a good fit. Its fulfills my desire to constantly meet new people and if I like the people, I keep in touch with them or I even take them out at night. If I dont like the people, they're gone in a few days... its the perfect relationship! I get to brag about my knowledge of the city by being overly helpful with advice on places to go. I literally write out full day itineraries for people... I just want them to get the full screen view of the city. I send them to my favorite restaurants, shops, bars, clubs, etc... I really should be getting commission from some of these places!
The other day this really gorgeous couple come to the hotel... they ask for a beer and we all sit and have a mugfull. They own an incredibly beautiful vineyard/hotel/chapel in South Africa and by the end of our beer they told me if I want to come work there next year, the job is mine. Talk about fast connections!
Enough about work. A few other things i've done in the past month and a half: joined a Nike running group, Colonia (beach in Uruguay) for the day, read Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe, The Secret and Running with Scissors (all great) and now reading Motorcycle Diaries, seen The Departed (my expectaitions were too high), became an information counter for friends of friends visiting (no complaints) and well, just enjoying summer (which thanks to global warming, you guys in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying as well). Feliz Domingo :o)
